The National Park area is more than 300 square kilometers wide and is heavily forested by beech and spruce trees. Trekking in Plitvice Lakes is a pleasure as there are excellent and well maintained wooden walkways throughout the park area. Wildlife viewing in Plitvice Lakes is a popular activity as the National Park is inhabited by numerous animal and bird species.

The Plitvice Lakes are situated near the Croatian border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Park has pleasant and sunny summers and long and snowy winters. The Plitvice Lakes can be visited year round, but the peak season for tourism is from July to August when the Park is usually very crowded especially in the afternoons. The Park is open daily throughout the year.
There are three hotels in Plitvice Lakes and more accommodation possibilities can be found in the small nearby village of Korana.
The restaurants in Plitvice Lakes serve mainly local specialties and are very reasonably priced. There is no nightlife in Plitvice Lakes, but the hotels and the restaurants have some traditional live music performances.
Travelling to Plitvice Lakes is easiest by bus or car from the capital Zagreb which has an international airport. There is no public transportation within the park boundaries but there is a bus connection to the Upper Lakes as the distances between the Lakes are quite long.
The entrance fee includes bus transportation to the Upper lakes and ferries across the lakes. Driving is forbidden in the area. There is nocar rental in Plitvice Lakes but you can rent a car elsewhere in Croatia. There are excellent, wide wooden walkways and the main walk trails can be toured in a day. The Plitvice Lakes is a very safe destination.
